• Best thing to do is go with suggestions already made, but if you want to do it yourself you could use Weebly which will allow you to build and host the site including blogs, etc. It is simple to use for someone with basic skills, but in the end you are better of hiring someone if you "don't speak computer" CB Seattle answered in Tech/Science 4 months ago | Report 2 0 6 comments by Rock Jocelyn, Rock Jocelyn, and CB Seattle… Thanks, CB. I do want to do it myself. I've had friends build websites for me before, and I find it's a hassle if there's no way for me to get into the code. I'm no programming genius, but I can figure out how to do small things I'd like to change, and I'd rather do it myself than have to ask someone every two days. This is web design for people who really don't know anything about code. I need a little bit more freedom here. Also, as far as I can tell, there's no way for me to import my old blog posts. As far as importing a blog - that's a tough one. Weebly guys are good so you might email and ask them. I'll try and think of other options but ease and flexibility is a rare combo. Unfortunately, the options for help with building web sites, at this point in time, are: 1) Do it yourself 2) Use a crappy free service that simplifies the process and limits what you can actually do 3) Hire someone else to do exactly what you want The reasons why it's so difficult is another discussion in itself. The best middle ground at this point, in my opinion, is Dreamweaver and a decent cheap host. • I use www.fatcow.com. It's really cheap for hosting. The trick is go all the way through the registration process and then right before it wants you to pay, you just close the window and a pop-up will come up offering you a better rate (something like $3.75/mo). It gives you one free domain w/ registration and also has a bunch of tools for simple development (blog builders, forum apps, etc.). The only thing is that about two months after I signed up, there were issues with down servers for a couple of weeks which was really pissing me off. But I haven't had any problems for a few months now. Also, they have pretty helpful, free, 24/7 customer service. Good luck. Edit: oh yeah, also has unlimited hard disc space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited mysql databases, domain hosting, and email accounts. All the goodies. Check it out. • I was going to suggest you might take a gander at www.thetempestonline.wordpress.com as the pair of guys that run that are pretty webpage happy and knowledgable... (or at least as much as two gay guys who are struggling to get away from discrimination can be, right now...) Though they are much farther down the coast than you are, they MIGHT be interested in helping.... but I think you have some local resources that might be better. The timing isn't quite right for Dan and Seth right now. Read their blog if you want a horror story... Daniel might be able to help as he'll have time on his hands and could use a good reference. • I would say that a good way to go for the blog is to use wordpress.com. You can get an account for free and then if you want to have your own domain name it is like $15 per year plus whatever the domain name charges are. You should also be able to import old info and export new info. It isn't too difficult, but you might need some help if you are a newbie. Consider hiring that guy Matt who offered his services I guess. I can't say if he is good or fair or anything, but it sounds like he could help. One caveat: Wordpress.com doesn't allow ads right now, but if you build your own site using wordpress.org, you can have whatever kind of ads you want, because it will be run on a different server. I usually register my domains through godaddy and they seem okay. I also have a site registered through verio.com. I'm not an expert in who the best domain registers are, but they will probably try to sell you web hosting at the same time no matter who you go with.
