I'd recommend a visit to a doctor, or at least a call to a consulting nurse to see what they recommend. You don't want an infection spreading to your inner ear; then you end up with vertigo and all kinds of irritating problems. Plus it fucking hurts.

My husband keeps getting ear infections because he'll use whatever he has in his hands to scratch his ear - q-tip, keys, pen, whatever - and last ear infection he had, he'd actually very nearly perforated the eardrum. He's a bit more careful after that.

Get thee to a doctor! Old-fashioned amoxicillin is mega cheap - like, $10 for a ten day course, and if you know someone with a prescription pad, they can just write if for you without a full exam.

You need to get this treated - homeopathic remedies and comfort care are soothing, but won't treat the root infection. Severe ear infections can lead to all kinds of complications, including:

-susceptibility to other infections in the sinuses
-ruptured ear drums (how awesome is it to wake up with a ringing in your ears and blood on your pillow?)
    -permament hearing loss
    -sepsis/blood poisoning (and possibly death)

Besides, do you really want a raging infection that close to your brain? No, I didn't think so.

first off, i agree, you should see a doctor. for one they might help you figure out why you have an earache/infection so you can avoid getting another one. they will also tell you WHERE the site of the problem is and obviously treat you for said problem. the where is important in understanding home remedies and treatment in general. so, if you don't know that, it is hard to find a treatment that will work.

some of these answers are talking about outer ear infections (from your ear drum to the outside of your ear - i.e. your ear canal) and some people are talking about middle ear (in the space behind your ear drum with the 3 bones BEFORE but not including your inner ear). It is necessary to know what type of ear infection you have to take these recommendations in to consideration (i.e. hydrogen peroxide drops will not treat a middle ear infection).

i know that isn't an answer but i hope it gives perspective to the recommendation that you should go to a doctor because looking up home remedies may be fruitless and wasting time may make things worse.

    i hope you feel better!

Yes, go see a doctor when you can. BUT, since ear pain is NOT a 911 worthy problem (exceptions do always occur), there are definitely some things you can do to help manage it.

First, take some anti-inflammatory medication and other pain killers you might have without going over board. Second, heat up a wet towel and lay with your pained ear upon it. As it cools down, replace/reheat the towel.

For some other info on ear infections: antibiotics will usually work very fast to clear it up, but make sure you follow through with the entire course as prescribed by your doctor. In some cases, you may need to see a doctor afterwards about reduced hearing in your ear. See them ASAP about this, because although it is possible for your hearing to come back on its own, they may need to drain the fluid buildup from behind your ear.

    Go to the doctor.

And sleep. Sleep actually works on every kind of infection.

If your earache is severe, you should go to a doctor. When a earache is more mild, though, try this home remedy. I'm prone to earaches, and my doctor recommended doing this before going to the clinic. Combine 1 part rubbing alcohol w/ 1 part hydrogen peroxide. You'll only need a tablespoon or two total. Lie on your stomach with the affected ear up, towards the ceiling, and have someone carefully pour the mix into your ear canal. It will feel slightly warm (from the alcohol) and bubbly (from the hydrogen peroxide). Leave it in your ear for about 5 minutes, then put a small towel against your ear and stand up. The fluid will drain out. Does it work? It's worked for me every time I've used it in the last 5 years :)

Demand Perocet. Also antibiotics but get the Percocet first.
