What's the deal with hundredpushups.com?

OK, so I've been trying to exercise my fat ass, and I ran across this site, and it's confusing the heck out of me.

First, it wants you to do as many push-ups as you can, and then pick the matching category, which I did, and I followed that for 2 weeks. then it asks you to do as many as you can again.

the problem is, at the end of 2 weeks, it only ever asked me to do 8 at once; to move on to the next week, you need to do 16, otherwise it tells you to repeat.

I don't understand how they expect you to ever do twice as many as you've ever been asked to do before. So, instead, I tried the next most difficult column. I finally finished that, but now what it wants me to do is easier than what I was doing (last week was 12, 13, 10, 10, 15; now it wants me to do 12, 10, 7, 7, 9)

How does this make any sense?

Part of it is so that you aren't overworking yourself and causing muscle fatigue. I think it explains it fairly well on the site. I did it for awhile but got sidetracked moving.

The main idea is that you are at once doing as many as you possibly can. Then you are working up to being able to do them well (easily). After one week of that you should be able to then double them with the same amount of effort that it took to do half the first week. Then on and on. You don't do your max amount every day, because you won't be giving your muscles the chance to fully recover. You can't go at 120% every day or you'll just fuck your body.

The program is designed to move quickly if your body rapidly progresses and builds strength... but to hold you back at a given level if you don't, until that particular level becomes easy enough for you to move up.

It's likely the reason you find jumping from 8 to 16 too difficult is because the sets of 8 you're doing now are still relatively difficult to you. You're supposed to get to a physical point where doing 8 at once is real easy, at which point doing 16 is challenging but possible. It's possible you'll need to camp at this level for a few weeks. That's totally natural.
