Why do people stretch their ears out with those circle earrings?

If they regret it later, how do they get their ear back to normal???

Gauges and other tribal-style body mods are a particular fashion, that's all. And my grandfather used to rail about women with pierced ears the same way - "everyone will think you're a whore and it will never grow back!"

It's not my cup of tea, so I don't have my earlobes gauged. *shrug*

Body modification in general is my tribute to the years l spent in Kenya. Like tattoos, all of my piercings represented certain phases or events in my life that l wanted to commemorate. For some, it's just a fashion trend and they want to look different or unique. l guess l can get on board with that, but it's not why l do it. Anyway, now everyone looks like that, so it's not quite as unique as it once was.

The ears often bounce back surprisingly well, and are one of the few body parts that when pierced, will shrink back to normal given enough time. lt took about two years for mine to shrink back before l stretched them out again, but they do go back to normal eventually, unless of course the size of the piercing is past a certain point.

Obviously, folks with gauged ears have no regrets.

But, without snark it looks like a gauge of two (6mm) is the point of no return, less than that your ears will heal over time, more than that, be prepared to have the stretched lobes into old age. Just like tattooing and other kinds of body modification, stretched lobes will last your whole life. This doesn't dissuade many, many people.

I stretched mine when I was 16 and couldn't get tattooed, because I thought it was important to be tough looking/punk rock back then. I've since taken out all of my other piercings, and don't show my tattoos as much as I used to- but I've left my ears stretched. Sometimes I regret it a little- but mostly I don't really even notice them, and when I do I like the way they look. I have solid wood plugs, and I still wear other earrings with them. My hair usually covers them so you can't even tell that they're there. I'm at 5/8" which is fairly large, but not ugly. If I ever do decide to take them out, I've been told to expect that they'll get quite a bit smaller, but never close back up. I choose not to worry about it.
