The music industry's sales charts are determined not by how many albums consumers buy, but by how many albums stores buy in bulk and by how many stations the song's label has commissioned to play the track in their rotation. iTunes obviously factors in consumer sales, but keep in mind that the marketing machine remains in play, and certain songs are going to get more airplay and hype than others. It's a popularity contest than has little to do with the actual music.

Music charts are all all marketing and economic manipulation. Being #1 isn't what it might have been 20-30 years ago (and I say 'might' because back then the playlists and chart may have been just as easily manipulated).

As with every art form, taste is relative.

You probably don't like those songs because you aren't the average itunes customer.

Because their average customer is a 16-year old girl?

Because anyone who uses iTunes is an idiot? Is this a trick question.
