I need a new author to fall in love with.

I need to branch out and discover someone new any help would be greatly appreciated.

Favorite Author: Haruki Murakami

Current: Raymond Carver (he's changing my mind about short fiction).

Most Recent obsessions: Andrew Vachss, Eliot Pattison, Jim Thompson, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett.

I tend to read all an author has offer back to back so I would love an author with a large body of work I can get lost in.

Thanks in advance Paul Constant!

How about Jonathan Lethem? He's a nice mix of Murakami and crime writers (he's more Chandler than Thompson, though). I'd read one of his more current ones (I'm telling you: Chronic City is phenomenal) and then go back to his earlier stuff. Motherless Brooklyn is really amazing. It's about a detective with Tourette's syndrome.

If not Lethem, then try Colson Whitehead. John Henry Days has the nice cynical streak that some of those crime writers have.

If you want to continue your crime streak, may I suggest Patricia Highsmith? She's got a huge body of work and she's brilliant. Her Ripley series is amazing (better than the Matt Damon movie by far.)

And if you're looking for short stories, I'd like to suggest Amy Hempel. She doesn't have a lot, but I think she's even better than Carver.
