• I've got extended basic cable, DVR, and internet, and it sets me back about $135 per month after taxes. This also includes HD, which costs more. That doesn't include phone service. It's definitely gotten more expensive the past 2 years. Internet hasn't changed much (though they just increased their cable modem rental from $2 to $5 per month), but cable is ridiculous. I used to pay about $120 for all of the above plus HBO. I will say that their internet access kicks ass. One thing with Comcast, it's all about the introductory rates. These last about 6 months, and then they creep the price up. Just call and they'll reset your introductory rate if you threaten to cancel. My bill was up to over $160 at one point (and will be there again in a few months if I don't call them). Except they would. But l digress. ln this economy, it never hurts to see if you can bargain them down to a lower price, as long as you make it sound like THEY'RE getting a deal. "l have the money for one item, but not enough for two. How bout l give you this much for the two?" This is done in countries all over the world on a daily basis. They still make more than they would, and the worst thing they can say is no. Obviously this works better in smaller chains or mom and pop shops than at, say, Sears or Target. Last month, I simply asked my landlady if other, open apartments in my building were any less than my current one. My lease was up in November and I was planning on a rent increase. Instead, she dropped the rent on my place $30/month! My contract with Comcast was up, as well. My bill went from $29 (internet only; own neither a landline nor a TV) to $59/month. No! IM'ed with the Comcast rep and now am back to paying $29 for the next six month. Granted, neither took much haggling, per se, but just asking yielded great results. Patricia commented 19 days ago | Report And sometimes, just asking is all it takes. Now is really the best time to try haggling for a better deal, when businesses across the board are suffering. Also, haggling in *any* scenario in which the salesperson is working on commission is advisable.
