I have room to take one book on a 2 week vacation. What would you recommend?

I typically read non-fiction but I'm open to anything.

    robert boleno - 2666
    don delillo - underworld
    d h lawrence - sons and lovers
    dan simmons - ilium (sci-fi)
cd payne - youth in revolt
    jonathan frazen - the corrections
dave eggers - a heartbreaking work of staggering genius (biography)
jorge luis borges - ficciones (short-ish but painful, will take time to read)
bill bryson - a short history of nearly everything (non-fiction)
robert pirsig - zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance (non-fiction, philosophy)

all of those books are good, totally readable (unlike some of the other shit that is going to get mentioned: ulysses, gravity's rainbow, infinite jest), and seem about right for a 2 week vacation give or take a couple days.

if i had to pick one, it would be heart breaking work of staggering genius for fiction and zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance for non.

    ps kindle is correct answer

    have fun!

    "The weather makers"

Non fiction... it'll take you a while... and it is serious.

    You'll be better for it.

David Sedaris is great for travel. The stories are short so it is easy to start and stop and guaranteed to make you happy.

Have you heard how amazon is looking to CHANGE THE WORDS in books on the kindle to supposedly stop file sharing! OMG!

Amazon can take their kindle and their fake words and shove it up their ass!

    I want real books!

    Umm, sorry about the rant...

You might be interested in something by Oliver Sacks...like, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" or his most recent one about music. He is a neurologist who writes about brain stuff.

    Other brain-oriented books:
Anything by Kay Redfield Jamison...she is a psychiatrist who also has bipolar disorder. Her memoir is "An Unquiet Mind."
A compelling book is "The Center Cannot Hold" a memoir by a woman who has schizophrenia and is an accomplished professor/lawyer/etc. Her name is Elyn R. Saks

I guess I would pick The Center Cannot Hold though...you should read it if you haven't! Although, I don't know if you like memoirs.
