    yes.

    ----but----

fwiw Zeppelin and Sabbath were formed at the same time, but Zeppelin's first release was in 69 whereas Sabbath waited until 1970 to put something out.

Then of course comes the two hair-splitting arguments of a) whether formation or album release is what counts and b) whether or not Zeppelin counts as 'metal'. This is an argument that cannot be won.

I personally feel that if you count Zeppelin as metal you need to count other 'heavy for their time' bands and thus Elvis, The Beatles, and many many many others join the argument.

    also all caps /= necessary.

It's Sabbath or Deep Purple. Zeppelin were a heavy white blues band, not a whole lot different than other heavy white blues bands of the late sixties, like Jethro Tull (in their earliest incarnation) or even Cream (or Hendrix, who was a black man playing white blues-rock). Zep was never HATED like Sabbath or Purple were, and that ostracism is helped cement the metal sound. When Zep were pursuing increasing muso glory, and (thug-flavored) hippiedom, Sabbath and Purple were never headed in any other direction but a brick wall at 100 MPH. That's metal.
