Swimming Lessons

Does anyone have recommendations or thoughts on the best places to take swimming lessons in Seattle? I am 48 years old, so obviously I'm not looking for a kiddie class. Oh -- and I am totally embarassed that I cannot swim. Thanks for your help.

    To Born Swimmer:
I believe you are a born swimmer; you just have not been given the right steps to learn how yet. We teach adult lessons for beginner swimmer, adults wanting to conquer fear in water so that they can learn to swim and advanced swimming. So you know you are not alone 65% of adults are afraid in deep water oceans and lakes and 45% are afraid in swimming pools. Most lesson program (that were recommended) teach frontcrawl verses how to be free in deep water. The frontcrawl is complex and does not address adult’s worry about safety in the water and why most adults drop out of lessons. There is something that comes before stokes...swimming. We define swimming as moving from here to there with comfort and ease getting air and rest when you want without worry about the bottom, side or shore. Once you can do this then learning frontcrawl is a fun bonus not life dependent. I'm Orca Swim School. Our program is Miracle Swimming and a licensed instructor of Miracle Swimming Institute. It's so important to skip no steps! Way to make your first step!

I have a great swim instructor at the YMCA on Madison. Her name is Marissa. They have multi-week classes for adults who can't swim.

Medgar Evers pool also has good instructors.

Then there is a woman named Mary Meyer who teaches adults who can't swim, Mercer island and Queen Anne, I think. Google Mary Meyer Life Fitness

I'd contact the American Red Cross as well as your local YMCA for leads.
Either group usually provides classes for a minimal fee. Classes can
range from individual instruction, to group lessons for adults or all ages.
They are aware of your embarrassed feelings and will work with you.
Do it. You'll never regret it.

A lot of adults haven't learned to swim, don't be embarrassed by that! I used to be a teaching assistant in a swim class at a community college, and there were quite a few young adults (and a couple older adults) in the classes who had never learned to swim. (You'd be astonished how many people, especially women, are absolutely petrified to put their faces in the water.)

Anyway, my suggestion would be one of the YMCA's. The newer ones have really nice facilities, they all have adult classes, and they generally have good instructors. There's two new ones in the southend - SeaTac and Auburn - but I don't know about other areas.

Seattle Parks has adult swimming lessons at their pools. I know nothing about how good their adult instructors are, but their lessons for kids are great, and the lessons are cheap, so it wouldn't hurt to try.
